PE and Geography

My dream job is to be teaching Physical Education but ow can I include Geography in to Physical Education class well it actually very easy. I can locate sports or games that are played in other countries. We can use maps and compasses to go Orienteering. I can have students come up with their own game that reflect the area in which they live. How can we use our environment that we live in build a new fun activity. Geography can be a very fun part of a PE class that can give students opportunities to experience thing that they may not do everyday.

Games that can be discovered from all over the world can be a great way to add verity to PE class. From the Philippines Tinkling is a popular dance in the Philippines that is based on the movements of a tinkling bird. It is similar to double-dutch jump roping but with the use of bamboo poles (broomsticks make an acceptable substitute) instead of rope. It requires a minimum of three people to play–two to hold each end of the poles and one to jump in and out of the space between the poles. Rhythm is maintained by the kids holding the poles and slapping the poles together.(O’Farrell, 2012) I remember doing this activity in 6th Grade it was fun but very challenging. It teach rhythm and timing.

Another activity that you can play in PE is orienteering. According to Orienteering USA, Orienteering is a competitive international sport that combines racing with navigation. It is a timed race in which individual participants use a specially created, highly detailed map to select routes and navigate through diverse and often unfamiliar terrain and visit control points in sequence. Courses also can be enjoyed as a walk in the woods, with difficulty levels from beginner to expert offered at most events.(“What is orienteering ,” 2013) This is a great Life long activity to teach students. It teaches map reading skills, like direction, distance, and understanding elevation changes.

These are two examples of many games and activities that can be related to geography. Many different cultures have there own games that reflect that culture. Students can learn to appreciate those cultures through the games they play.

Human Effect on Environment

The effects of that man has on a the environment has at time been thought as good but at the same time they have hurt. The building of Dams for instant has had a huge change on the land. The environmental consequences of large dams are numerous and varied, and includes direct impacts to the biological, chemical and physical properties of rivers and riparian (or “stream-side”) environments. (“Environmental impacts of,” 2002) Not only does is change the flow of a river is creates a reservoir that floods the land. Changing the way the river affects the land. Sediment that flows down the river settles in areas that it maybe not have settled. Man made dams changes fish migrations which can change the feeding pattern of other animals. Not only does it effect nature but also effects people down river. Dams reduce the amount water that people down stream receive. But at the same time if water is release to fast it may flood areas down stream. We have a big effect on the environment by the choice we make to find way to make our life better.

What other environmental effects have human caused. Well along with Dams the on that seem to be having a effect and goes hand and hand with dams is the need to clear land to build and farm on on. This has not bigger effect on the land and nature would the cutting down of the Amazon. Most of this lost land has been replaced with grass for cattle. In 2008, the Brazilian government announced that the rate that the Amazon was being destroyed had sped up during the time of the year that it normally slows down. In just five months in 2007, more than 3,200 square kilometres were deforested. The amazon continues to reduce in size from deforestation.  (“What is the,” 2012) This effect can and is being effected globally with the as the increases CO2 in the atmosphere. Also the loss of habitat for the animals in the amazon. These are two very man made problems. They are two very possible units to look at in geography. Students should learn what is happening and look at issue they will need to deal with in their lifetime.

Globalization has made our world a more accessible. For instance Amazon, we ordered a product listed on Amazon. Now if you were not aware Amazon cares thousands of items that you can order online, but if they do not have it you can buy off their website from another online store that list those items on Amazon. Well I bought a product from Amazon from one of their other stores well not knowing this store was in England and we did not even have a clue about it. You see our world is more accessible because we have an opportunity to interact with those other countries. I have experienced the globalization with the influx on different cultures moving in to the area I live. With Hispanics, and Asians opening businesses, they bring their culture and tradition. Globalization has made me appreciate where I live. With more and more people moving to urban areas and cities becoming ever crowded I am glad to be living in rural area.

Globalization has for a lot of way made the world a better place. People can not share ideas faster with each other. Supporters of globalization argue that it has the potential to make this world a better place to live in and solve some deep-seated problems like unemployment and poverty. (Collins, 2010) Collins in looking at globalization on an economic issue looking for more free marks to hopefully create more jobs. I see globalization as a way to bridge the gap between cultures. People can see how other live and learn about the lives they life and then can compare it to themselves.

A negative part of globalization is that we are losing the cultures that make us who we are. It give people more opportunity to do things that can hurt people more then help. Globalization can also other economic issue with more and more jobs moving overseas.. The bad side of globalization is all about the new risks and uncertainties brought about by the high degree of integration of domestic and local markets, intensification of competition, high degree of imitation, price and profit swings, and business and product destruction.(Mourdoukouts, 2011) I see Globalization also being interfering with the culture of some countries. It may hurt traditions of some cultures it may change the identity of that culture.

Globalization is going to continue, as technology gets better. The ability to quickly send information from one place to the next will make our world smaller. I it going to bring us closer but is it at the cost of the traditions we live by.

Physical System Impact

It can be a big deal how physical systems can effect the ecological systems. Living in an area with lakes I have seen how changes to the ecology of the lake has been effected by man made physical systems. The have been some spill ways added to streams that lead in to lake. These streams drain wet lands but in the spring the water is high and bate fish reproduce in those wet lands. The young fish grow and then follow the streams out to the lake in the summer. Those streams are blocked off and the bate fish have no place to reproduce. That is just a small effect of of how Physical systems can effect ecology of an area. I would use this as a lesson to teach students about how the ecosystem work in our area.

A big project that has been proposed over the years by a major land owner in the area is to build a dam on the Milford River that flows out of Lower Gar Lake of the Iowa Great Lakes. The goal would be to flood the land and create more lake shore property. I think I would use this idea and create a unit for students determine the effect on the environment, the flooding of farmland and wild life management area. It going to make a big change to the Ecosystem in the area. The students would take a look at the positive economic benefits of creating more water front property in the area. They could look at what could be the revenue for the county from the taxes. They would lastly have to take a look at the politics that it would take to get this accomplished. The possible pros and con of taking farmland and wildlife area in to a lake.   

Sense of Place

Where I live has totally has defined my sense of place. Living in a northwest Iowa town where life is totally dependent on the season. In the summer the lake is the place to be. Fishing, swimming boating are all common activities. Having a summer job working for one of the summer business. Summer people come and stay at lake side cabins and resorts to take advantage of the lakes. My sense of place is I live in a area that has made me appreciate that fact that to keep my community running is to have other people come and spend their money. In teaching students to look at where they live and have a sense that where they live as defined who they are.  People develop a “sense of place” through experience and knowledge of a particular area. A sense of place emerges through knowledge of the history, geography and geology of an area, its flora and fauna, the legends of a place, and a growing sense of the land and its history after living there for a time. (Woods, 2000)

What does a sense of place mean. It is a combination of characteristics that makes a place special and unique. Sense of place involves the human experience in a landscape, the local knowledge and folklore. Sense of place also grows from identifying oneself in relation to a particular piece of land on the surface of planet Earth. (“The art of,” 2014) Students that live and work in a small rural community tend to have a one common attribute they enjoy working hard, not to say that they all do but for the most part they do. Kids that grow up on farms have that instilled in them by there parents. Even kids that tend to live in town will have some of those same ideas because they will go out and help there friend or even work for a farmer. While students living in an urban environment can have the sense to work hard they seem to be more interested in the active art and music, because those opportunities are available. Student should embrace the sense of place they have and take advantage of all that it offers. If your a hard working rural individual take advantage of all the skills you will learn. If you are an urban student it important to take advantage of all it has to offer.

Now with that said the kind region will also affect who you are. You can say that students living in New York and students living in Las Angles are not the same. The region you live will also effect who you are. Students in southern California live in the sun talk about going to the beach and eating Sushi all things stereotyped on TV. New York students maybe look to go to Coney Island. Student need to understand that where they live effects the person they become. Even where I live you can see the difference in a kid that lives in town and the kids that live on a farm. Life is defined by where you live not to say people do not change or have a sense the does not match everyone else. Where we live is a big part of the type of person we are. I don’t surf because there is not ocean waves to ride. I can stack hay bails but my cousin in Arizona as never seen a hay Bail. Our lives and sense on place is totally tied in to the people we are.

Spatial Terms-Rubis

Someday in the near future their may be a major disaster, or a war. The news will show maps of the region where his takes place. Then they will show images of people, places, and maybe the effects of what ever has happened. With the understanding the world in Spacial Terms the students will be able to analyze what they are seeing. How to use mental maps to organize information about people, places, and environments in a spatial context (Maxwell, 2011) How to analyze the spatial organization of people, places, and environments on earth’s surface. (Maxwell, 2011) Students will be able to Read that map, knowing where in the world this region is located. They will be able to understand the climate, the culture, and the economics form the pictures on the news. These skills will make the events seem even more real to students because they understand theses skill.

What skill do we need to learn first so that you can make spatial analysis. Students need to have the ability to look at a map and be able to read the lines, the coloring, the scale of the map, and the terrain. They need to be able to collect data form the maps and the images that they see. After collecting that data they will need the skill to analyze the data. With these basic skill they can start to be come spatially aware.

What are some of the activities that students can do to start learning. Activities can in clue map making. Students can create maps of wear they live, the streets and major land marks. Students can make topographic maps of different terrains, and map of climate regions. They can create maps of population densities, making sure that they include all the appropriate resources. Students can also learn to create charts of data that they have collected. (Burris, 2014)

 Using Discovery Education, activity to to create maps. Student start off analyzing maps. They identify major elements of those maps. They look at other maps then then compare and contrast those maps. This helps them build an understand of what it take to build maps. Then student find a focus for their map being population, businesses or even the elevations of the area. They build their map. (Burris 2014)

Importance of being an Geographically Informed person

When I think of geography I tend to have the idea of looking at a map seeing where the places in the work that I would love to visit. Traveling back to Europe, or heading on a cross country trip to Arizona. That tends to be the first thing I think of when I see geography. As I have learn though it is a much larger study then just maps. It is the study of culture, population, climate, and according to our book it is “tool and techniques for us to think Geographically”.(S. Heffron & R. Downs (Eds.), 2012) Our world is getting smaller and we are becoming closer and closer. Technology linked people from all over the world. Using GIS (Geographic information system), such as satellites to look at images all from all over it has become a lot easier to see changes in the land. Just recently I use Google Earth and noticed that my home town who just recently put in a new football field. That new football field is already on Google Earth and you a can see the detail. So you see the growing need to understand geography is important. But what else do we need to learn to become more geographically aware.

According to (Balderston, D., & Lambert, D. (2000)), it is the responsibility of the Geography teacher to maintain the sustainability of the Geography class. That means we need to continually keep Geography relevant to the times. As the world continues to change teacher must be able to adapt and Identify the changes. The biggest change I feel is the increasing urbanization. More and more people are moving to the cities. It is geographies responsibility to study and inform the world of the changes and why those changes maybe happening. Understanding the need for a better system to train and guideline to Geography, in 1985 the Geographic National Implementation Project, was found by the Association of American Geographers, the National Geographic Society, and the American Geographic Society, implemented recommendations national guidelines (Clark, J., & Stoltman, J. (2000).) I see that as proof that becoming a Geographically informed person has been at the center of developing education. When you have so many people trying to develop a better way to teach Geography then that shows its importance.
